Lord of the Dance

2508690354_593f44bef5_mIt felt like the whole world danced today. I saw a cardinal about 10 feet up the trail. As it pecked and pulled at some morsel on the path, it hopped back and forth using all of its weight mightily hoping that its breakfast would be…well, whatever it was! From my vantage point on the bike, it was dancing before me. So to was the snake slithering, the squirrel bouncing, the little blue birds fluttering, the groundhog scampering, the white butterflies flitting, the frog leaping, the canoers playfully paddling, families cycling and the deer pausing, looking and bounding away into the woods. It was as if the wilderness corridor was dancing with God’s glory today!

I couldn’t help but think that this is EXACTLY the way God wants our world to be! Who can believe in a creation story that paints a God who wants to turn us out (well, Adam and Eve anyway) and punish us with toil and suffering? (By the way, Adam doesn’t know what suffering is until he’s gone 80 miles on a bike into the wind!) Nope, I see a gracious God turning us loose on the world- inviting us to dance and praise and celebrate God’s goodness in ALL that we do! God wants us to dance. If not, why would all the other creatures of the world model this sort of behavior. Clearly God was inviting me this day to dance on the pedals and give him all the glory.

There is nothing better than worshipping God in all of God’s glorious creation. If I were going to build a church- it wouldn’t have walls! I would start by planting some trees, then flowers and then perhaps invite some people! Creation speaks of the mystery of God, and to immerse yourself in that creation you really have to get away. Get isolated. Get Out! Yep, I’m a firm believer in taking the chance to lose yourself in creation in order to find your place in God’s world. Too often we think it’s our world, but when we see red birds dancing, little deer leaping and people paddling their way downstream, we realize we are simply one more creature created for God’s pleasure, not our own!

These lyrics came through loud and clear today…
“Dance then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said He!”

It really is MAGNIFICENT out there!  Dance!
